The Road to your Ceremony

When we view ceremony photos, it is clear that the two pivotal areas for décor are the stage or altar area and the aisle.  Aisles draw the eye towards the couple and create a foreground for the most important promise you will make and brides are using all kinds of creative ways to keep the foreground creative and indicative of the event as a whole.

The traditional white table runners of the past are the first things to change.  Brides have so many options now!  Runners can be personalized for you, including incorporating monograms, patterned or textured linens, and even glamorous edges like faux fur (nothing says a winter wedding like white fur-edged runners).  Brides can choose the more simple and blank rental runners (or even purchase one for themselves) or the sky is the limit in terms of what personal touches can be added to them.

Rose petals have also been a part of traditional aisle décor but these ideas are anything but traditional.  Weddings are large events with unified themes and the aisle can be the beginning of that creation with creative use of design in rose petals as well as in creating architectural features and drawing the eye towards the landscape.  Who knew something so simple and traditional could be so new!

With an evening wedding, light can also play a major role in setting the scene for your nuptials as custom lighting can add texture to the space or even display monogramming, your wedding date, or special wording you’d like to incorporate.  Simple lighting keeps the tone low-key but adds an element of warmth to an evening that can transform your moment.

Event Lounges

Whether you are planning your wedding or planning another special event, more and more clients are incorporating décor for their lounge areas into the total project plan.  Lounge areas serve as informal seating between the wedding and reception and can also be the first step in creating a unified theme for your event.  When guests are greeted with the finishing details that bring your theme together, the mood is set for a wonderful evening. 

And this décor doesn’t begin and end with a few arrangements at the bar!  Cocktail height tables with décor mirroring the reception site, monogrammed paper goods that compliment the place settings guests will see soon, and especially the use of light can create a relaxing place for guests to mingle, relax and get ready for the big event. 

Floral pieces should coordinate with the larger event, albeit on a smaller scale.  Multi-level cylinders with submerged orchids, rose petal table runners, mirrors, crystal, and decadent fabrics can all create a beautiful setting for conversation that is a seamless introduction to the event to come.

Soft candlelight is a beautiful addition to these areas as frosted glass, flowers and coordinating linens create a lush and rich feel to a cocktail hour and can even create a stunning location for the complete reception for those brides who wish to nix the traditional dinner idea for their guests.  Music and the tinkling of glasses can do the rest for setting the mood, indoors or out, and lounges become the perfect accessory to your event.

Fun with Feathers

Whether its Alexander McQueen’s fluffy feather underskirts or beautiful feathered hair picks to complement your birdcage veil, feathers are all the rage with brides.  Peacock and ostrich feathers seem to be the favorites but I’ve also had a few brides with colored marabou feathers to complement bouquet holders or to decorate for their wedding showers or bachelorette parties. 

The fanciful nature of ostrich feathers can be used to create a variety of feels for your event.  When combined with sleek containers, rich colors (like red and/or black), they have a sophisticated, retro feel to them that brings to mind a recreated 40s ballroom with Frank Sinatra and other big band music playing in the background and tuxedo-clad waiters circling with platters of tastey appetizers and beautifully plated dinners.  Aaahh, I’m almost getting hungry! 

I also love that those same elements can be used to create a very feminine affair.  Add a rich fuchsia, crystal details and voilà!  The transformation to a whimsical and romantic affair begins and I see gold chargers, fuchsia napkins with beaded holders, crystals dangling from the chandeliers, scattered on the tables and providing depth at the candy buffet!  I’d love to see a subtle pattern, maybe a simple stripe or polka dot that could bring in accent colors, maybe used as a table runner and mirrored in the ribbon-bound programs guests have at each place setting or wrapped around their boxed favors. 

And don’t even get me started on the peacock blue!  It is such an exciting color this year and variations abound.  Brides are looking in the range of “Tiffany” to Robins Egg and the blues are just gorgeous with gold, silver or even chocolate (another stylish color this year) elements.  This can also incorporate other detail colors like rich purples!  The synergy is fantastic!

Creative Centerpiece Elements

I love all the fun elements, whether organic elements or not, that brides are incorporating into their décor!  We have really enjoyed working with feathers, fruit, moss, paper, candles and other light, even candy and coffee as centerpiece elements that are outside the traditional floral pieces.

With the benefit of adding different textures to a piece and also allowing many brides to get the most for their budgets, we’ve been incorporating elements such as these for many seasons.  The use of fruit is one beautiful element and can be used as whole fruit filling containers or as the base of an arrangement (the bright green of Granny Smith apples for instance or the sunny yellow of whole lemons).  It adds texture to a simple container and depth to a centerpiece while complementing a theme.
